Mandus is opposed in his tasks by the Manpigs, deformed swine-like monstrosities that patrol the depths through which he descends.Īfter a series of puzzle-like tasks, Mandus eventually reactivates the Machine, but the Engineer betrays him, taking control of the Machine and unleashing Manpigs out into the streets of London to round up unsuspecting victims with which to feed itself. The Engineer tasks Mandus with clearing the floodwaters and bringing the Machine back online, providing ongoing guidance through telephones throughout the facility. The Machine has been sabotaged, putting his sons in danger. Mandus receives a call from "the Engineer", who tells Mandus that Edwin and Enoch have been trapped far below them, in the "Machine" which Mandus created beneath his house. He hears the voices of his sons, Edwin and Enoch, calling for him as they lead him through the different areas. At the beginning of the game, he awakens from a fever that has lasted for several months, after returning from a disastrous expedition to explore Aztec ruins in Mexico. Set in London on New Year's Eve, 1899, the game's protagonist is Oswald Mandus, a wealthy industrialist and butcher who is implied to be the great grand-nephew of Daniel, the protagonist of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Some take place in the past, some in the present, and some are overtly real while some may be imagined.
Playing this game is therefore different from playing other otome games because even key events in the storyline are not fixed.The game features several interlocking storylines. The heroine has also gotten amnesia differently in each route.
The pre-existing relationships the heroine had before amnesia are different in each route. Events that take place in one route may or may not have happened in another route.
However, unlike many games, each route in the game is a parallel world. Like many otome games, the events take place over a fixed time frame. Orion needs the heroine to recover her memories otherwise he would not be able to depart and return to his own world. Orion also serves as the main narrator to the story especially in the later story sequels. Since getting amnesia, a spirit called Orion attaches himself to the heroine and gives her advice and his perspective of things, he also provides her with that "inner voice". The game focuses on the actions and decisions the heroine has to make in order to retrieve her memories. The premise to the game involves the Heroine getting amnesia and losing all recollection of her current status and lifestyle. Each route is a parallel world where the heroine seeks to understand more about her selected male character. In Amnesia, the male characters that the female character can interact with are based on the symbolic suit symbols from a card deck with the following storylines (commonly known as 'routes') in the game: Heart, Spade, Clover, Diamond and Joker.ĭepending on which route is chosen, the player's relationship with each character is different.
